History
Save Babies Through Screening Foundation of Canada was founded in 2005 in Ontario by Tammy Clark who lost her daughter, Jenna, to a fatty oxidation disorder called Medium Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MCADD) in 2002. MCADD is in most cases an easily treatable inherited disorder. However, to treat the disorder you need to know that you have it. Unfortunately it was this lack of knowledge that ultimately cost Jenna her life. At the time of Jenna's birth in 2002 the province of Ontario did not screen newborns for this disorder. As Jenna's parents search for answers about their daughters death, they learned that had their daughter been born in the province of British Columbia, she would have been screened for MCADD and would most likely be alive today. Tammy also learned about the organization Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, Inc., in the United States that supports, assists and advocates screening for disorders that are detectable through filter paper newborn screening. As Tammy learned about this organization, she recognized that the same issues that Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, Inc. (USA) was addressing needed to be addressed here in Canada. With the permission of Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, Inc. (USA), Tammy decided to found a similar organization here in Canada.
Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, Inc., (USA) was founded in 1998 by Dallas and Tera Mize who lost their infant son, Tyler, to a treatable inherited disorder detectable through newborn screening. Had Tyler been screened properly, he would have likely lived a normal, healthy life. Since its creation, SBTS has strived to provide information on newborn screening to parents and the medical community.
Both, Save Babies Through
Screening, Inc., and Save Babies Through Screening Foundation of Canada,
are non-profit organizations with no paid staff and are operated solely
by volunteers. Save Babies Through Screening Foundation of Canada would
like to thank the members of Save
Babies Through Screening Foundation, Inc. for their unwavering support.
